Which Espresso Machine Is Right For Me?
Six questions, one machine. Read top to bottom.
This isn't a quiz, just a thinking guide. The answers steer you toward one of three machines we keep in stock. If you'd rather just talk it through, ring 1300 551 626.
1. How many people drink coffee in the house?
One person, one or two drinks a day — any of the three machines is overkill, but the Lelit Mara X has the lowest entry price and warm-up time.
Two people, back-to-back drinks each morning — you need an HX or dual boiler. All three machines handle this comfortably.
Two people who want espresso and milk drinks at the same time — you want a dual boiler. The Quick Mill Essence is the choice.
2. What do you actually drink?
Mostly straight espresso — an HX is plenty. Lelit Mara X or Bezzera Luce. The bigger boiler on the Quick Mill is wasted on you.
Mostly milk drinks (flat white, latte, cappuccino) — steam capacity matters. Mara X or Luce will be fine; the Quick Mill is better if you steam constantly.
Both, often at the same time — dual boiler. Quick Mill Essence.
3. How much bench space have you got?
Tight (under 30cm wide) — the Mara X (29cm) and Luce (29cm) fit; the Quick Mill (33cm) is the largest.
Plenty — any of the three.
4. Are you upgrading from another espresso machine, or is this your first?
First prosumer machine — Mara X is the gentlest learning curve. PID smarts hide a lot of complexity.
Stepping up from an HX or single boiler — you'll notice the dual boiler immediately. Quick Mill.
Cross-shopping ECM Classika, Profitec Pro 300, Rocket Appartamento — the Mara X and Luce are in the same conversation. The Luce has the bigger saving against RRP.
5. Plumb in to mains water, or stay on a tank?
Tank is fine — any of the three.
I want plumb-in (now or later) — Quick Mill Essence ships ready for plumb-in, kit included. The Lelit and Bezzera are tank-only.
6. What's the budget for the machine?
Under $3,000 — Lelit Mara X ($2,600) or Bezzera Luce PID ($2,950).
Up to $4,000 — Luce is still the best value at this point; the Quick Mill stretches the budget.
$5,000+ — Quick Mill Essence PID ($5,900).
Don't forget the grinder
Whatever you pick, budget at least $500–$800 for a quality burr grinder. A great machine with a bad grinder makes mediocre coffee. Browse the grinder range or take a bundle from any machine product page.
