Lelit Mara X vs Bezzera Luce PID — Honest Comparison
If you have landed on this page you have probably already shortlisted both machines. Two heat-exchanger E61 machines, both PID-controlled, both Italian, both sitting within a few hundred dollars of each other. On paper they look almost identical. In practice there are a handful of differences that actually matter once the machine is on your bench.
Here is the straight comparison, with no marketing spin.
The Quick Answer
- Lelit Mara X ($2,600): Lighter, more compact, smarter PID logic, easier to live with day-to-day. Best for the home barista who wants a polished plug-and-play HX experience.
- Bezzera Luce PID ($2,950): Heavier build, larger boiler, older-school Italian engineering. Best for the buyer who values longevity, serviceability and a slightly more traditional feel.
Either will pull excellent shots. The choice is really about preference, footprint and how you want to interact with the machine.

Boiler and Steam
Both machines are heat exchangers, which means a single boiler heats the steam side and a coil running through it heats the brew water on demand. You get unlimited steam and unlimited brewing within reason, with a short flush before each shot to drop the brew temperature into range.
The Bezzera carries a 2.0 L boiler against the Mara X's 1.8 L. In daily use that 0.2 L gap is barely noticeable, but if you steam a lot of milk back-to-back — say three or four flat whites in a row — the Luce holds steam pressure a touch better. The Mara X recovers quickly, but the Bezzera feels like it has more in reserve.
Steam wand behaviour is similar. Both are articulated, both no-burn, both deliver enough power for proper microfoam on whole milk. The Bezzera wand sits slightly higher off the drip tray, which suits taller jugs.
PID and Temperature Control
This is where the two diverge most.
The Mara X uses Lelit's more recent PID algorithm, which actively manages boiler temperature based on usage patterns rather than just holding a static setpoint. After a flush it predicts the cooldown and adjusts. In practice this means more consistent brew temperature shot-to-shot without manual flushing routines.
The Bezzera Luce PID is a straightforward setpoint controller. You set the boiler temperature, you flush the group, you pull the shot. It works, and it works well, but you are doing slightly more of the temperature management yourself.
If you like to dial in and tweak, the Bezzera approach is fine. If you want the machine to do more of the thinking, the Mara X has the edge.
Build and Feel
The Bezzera is the heavier machine — 27 kg against 22 kg. You feel it the moment you lift the lid. The chassis, the panels, the way the cup tray sits — it has that older Italian "made to outlast you" feel. Service-wise, Bezzera has been making espresso machines since 1901 and the Luce is built around standard, easily-sourced components.
The Mara X is no slouch — it is genuinely well-made — but it is engineered for a slightly more modern aesthetic. Tighter panel gaps, more rounded edges, a smaller footprint. If your bench is tight, the 2 cm narrower body matters.
Day-to-Day Usability
A few small things add up:
- Warm-up time. Both want 25–30 minutes for the group to come up to temperature. The Mara X's PID gets the boiler ready in about 8 minutes but the E61 brass is the limiting factor in both cases.
- Tank access. The Luce has a larger 3.0 L tank with easier top-fill access. The Mara X tank is 2.5 L and the lid is a fraction more fiddly.
- Pressure gauges. Both have dual gauges (boiler and pump). The Bezzera's are slightly larger and easier to read across the kitchen.
- Noise. Vibration pumps on both. The Mara X is marginally quieter at the pump, but neither is silent.
Value For Money
At $2,600 the Mara X is the cheaper machine and arguably the better-engineered one for a home user. You are getting the smarter PID and the more compact body for less money.
At $2,950 the Bezzera asks for a bit more, and what you get for the extra $350 is a heavier machine, a slightly larger boiler, and a brand with deeper Italian service heritage. It is not a worse buy — it is a different buy.
Neither is grey market. Both come with the full 24-month Australian warranty, serviced locally, with parts on the shelf.
Which One Is For You
Get the Lelit Mara X if:
- You want the simpler, more "set and forget" experience
- Bench space is tight
- You like the idea of a PID that actively manages temperature
- You want to spend a bit less and put the savings into a better grinder
Get the Bezzera Luce PID if:
- You value build mass and traditional Italian engineering
- You steam a lot of milk in succession
- You want a brand with a long service track record
- You prefer to manage temperature yourself rather than let the algorithm do it
If you are torn between the two and you have the budget, also have a look at the Quick Mill Essence PID. At $5,900 it steps up to dual boiler — that is a different conversation, but worth knowing the next tier exists before you commit.
FAQ
Is the Lelit Mara X better than the Bezzera Luce PID?
Neither is objectively better. The Mara X has a smarter PID and a smaller footprint for less money. The Bezzera has a larger boiler, heavier build and a longer brand heritage. The right one depends on your priorities.
Can both machines be plumbed in?
Yes. Both have a plumb-in conversion option and both can be switched back to tank operation later. The conversion is straightforward for a technician but not something most owners do at home.
Do they need a separate grinder?
Yes. Neither has a built-in grinder, and you should not skimp on the grinder. Budget at least $600–$800 for a matching grinder. Underspending on the grinder is the single most common mistake at this tier.
What is the warranty?
Both come with a full 24-month Australian warranty when purchased from an authorised retailer. Servicing is done locally — no shipping to Italy.
How long do these machines last?
With basic descaling and an annual service, both machines will last 10–15 years comfortably. E61 groups and brass internals are extremely repairable, and parts for both brands are well-stocked in Australia.
Ready To Decide
Both machines are in stock and ready to ship Australia-wide with full 24-month warranty.
